Dewatering & Water Treatment Solutions for Casino Expansion

Project Location: Black Hawk, CO

Owner: Confidential

GC: PLC Industrial Construction

Project Revenue:  $675,000.00

Summary:

Dewatering and water treatment solutions were needed during a casino expansion due to an unplanned infiltration of groundwater contaminated with very high levels of manganese.

The Challenge:

During the construction of the casino’s major expansion project, a nearby structure caused groundwater to infiltrate the construction site. The site is located just a few feet from Clear Creek and the soil, comprised of cobbles and coarse alluvium, made standard wellpoint installation methods impossible. As dewatering was not anticipated the project schedule was negatively impacted by any time spent on installation. Griffin executed an installation schedule that was weeks ahead of alternate options.

In addition to the geologic and scheduling challenges the groundwater had extremely high levels of manganese, which has potential to buildup in traditional groundwater treatment systems. This increased the complexity of the treatment system that was necessary to remove the high levels of cadmium, lead, zinc and silica.

The Griffin Difference:

Griffin proposed and met an aggressive installation schedule for the engineered dewatering system by mobilizing two drill rigs that could handle the difficult drilling conditions. The dewatering and water treatment system installations ran concurrently to minimize delays. Water quality fluctuated commonly with rainfall and construction activities and Griffin personnel conducted continuous field testing to adjust the treatment system to meet discharge requirements. Griffin provided 24/7 operation and maintenance of the dewatering and treatment system throughout the duration of the project.
